This unprecedented deal appears to wipe away investigations into past tax filings, potentially erasing more than $100 million in back taxes and penalties from a single dispute, while also affecting other ongoing audits. That should concern every American who is expected to follow the tax laws and pay what they owe.
Congressional Republicans routinely invoke allegations of fraud to justify aggressive action against vulnerable communities, yet remain largely silent when President Trump and his family receive extraordinary protection from potentially massive federal tax liabilities.
Selectively invoking fraud as a weapon against marginalized communities while granting powerful and wealthy individuals extraordinary protection from scrutiny undermines public confidence in our entire system of justice.
No president, elected official, wealthy family, or politically connected business should be above the law. Tax enforcement must apply equally to everyone, regardless of wealth or political power.
