An open letter to the U.S. Congress

If Harvard Scientist Petrova Is Deported, She Will Be Persecuted! Free Her!

34 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

America is a nation founded on principles of freedom, including freedom of speech and refuge for the persecuted. The harsh treatment of this medical researcher over a relatively minor customs violation is deeply concerning. While she made a mistake in not properly declaring biological samples, the appropriate response should have been a fine, not visa revocation and potential deportation to face oppression in Russia for her political views against the unjust war in Ukraine. Punishing her so severely not only violates her human rights but sends a chilling message that America is no longer a welcoming place for scholars and those seeking to contribute to our society. Deporting her to Russia where she faces persecution and imprisonment would be a stain on our nation's values and make us all worse off by turning away valuable talent. We must uphold our principles as a free society and allow her to continue her research safely within our borders.
