Preserve federal library funding through IMLS investment

The Trump Administration's decision to eliminate federal funding for libraries through the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is a misguided policy that will severely undermine these vital community institutions. Libraries provide invaluable services and resources that enrich lives, support education, promote literacy, assist job seekers, and serve as cultural hubs accessible to all. Cutting off IMLS's modest $266.7 million budget, just 0.003% of federal spending, would deprive millions of Americans access to library programs, internet connectivity, books and research materials. Libraries are among our nation's most beloved public resources, with over 1.2 billion in-person visits annually. Particularly in rural and underserved areas, libraries offer essential opportunities for learning, enrichment and connection that should be strengthened, not diminished. This funding cut would disproportionately impact those who rely on libraries as gateways to knowledge, civic engagement and economic mobility. Federal support allows libraries to deliver critical services tailored to local community needs. Given the immense value libraries provide at minimal cost to taxpayers, the Administration should reconsider this short-sighted decision. Libraries uplift society and advance core democratic ideals of an educated, informed citizenry. Preserving federal library funding through IMLS is a wise investment that will continue paying dividends for generations to come. An attack on libraries is an attack on the aspirations of all Americans who turn to these great institutions as spaces of learning, opportunity and uplift.
