An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Commit the sin of empathy: vote for policies to protect the vulnerable

16 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am writing to you as a constituent who believes in holding empathy for those in their community that are poor, in a minority group, or otherwise vulnerable to majority rule impacts. Whether for religious reasons or simply the kindness that humanity shows one another, empathy should always be considered a virtue. As Bishop Mariann Budde said in her sermon, addressing the President: "Millions have put their trust in you. And as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives." The response to this from conservatives, who are often Christian, a religion that states clearly to love others and give to the poor, as well as to "let he who is without sin cast the first stone", was incredibly disappointing. They even called it "the sin of empathy," a recent concept that goes against teachings clearly outlined in the Bible. We have seen this concept before, the pushing of an "Us" vs "Them" mentality and the dehumanization of minorities, namely during the beginnings of the Nazi takeover in Germany. They used media and misinformation to push minorities into a "less than" or "Other" state so that any atrocities committed against them no longer register as hate crimes, but rather roll off the awareness in the wake of the constant onset of awful news articles. This has already begun to feel too familiar to those who know their history. What are you doing to ensure that the American government does not follow the path of the 1940's German Government? What are you doing to stop the executive orders and general movement by the federal government that are dodging the fair hiring practices laid out by the Civil Rights Act that were hidden under the acronym DEI and demonized? What are you doing while the Executive Branch of the Federal government is targeting minorities unfairly, banning them from sports through EOs, shipping non-criminal immigrants off to a controversial prison, and other acts that any person with empathy would disagree with? What are you doing to truly be a representative of your variety of constituents, ranging in ethnicity, sexual and gender orientation, and religion? What are you doing to hold empathy in your actions, both political and personal? While empathy is a value of many religions, any decent person should consider empathy and compassion as central to their moral code. I look forward to hearing back.
