I am writing to urge your support for the Mamas First Act, introduced by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Representative Gwen Moore of Wisconsin. This crucial legislation will address the heart-breaking rates of maternal mortality in the United States by expanding Medicaid coverage to include doula and midwifery care.
I am horrified by the statistics regarding pregnancy-related deaths. Particularly alarming is the disproportionately high mortality rate among Black mothers, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions. “This legislation addresses the maternal mortality crisis by expanding Medicaid to include doula and midwifery care, because having trusted partners in the birthing process saves lives,” - Rep. Alma Adams, a co-sponsor of the Mamas First House bill.
I support the bill's mission to amend Title XIX of the Social Security Act to include services such as prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care provided by doulas, midwives, and tribal midwives in Medicaid reimbursement eligibility. This expansion of coverage is essential to ensure access to vital care for all mothers, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
This is urgent! A quarter of Native-American babies and 16 percent of Black babies born in areas with limited or no access to care, the Mamas First Act represents is at least a first step towards addressing these disparities.
