I am deeply committed to the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on our community, nation, and planet. I recently studied a comprehensive report from the National Climate Assessment (NCA4, Chapter 29 on Mitigation) and found actionable and scientifically-backed measures that I believe our government should urgently adopt to mitigate climate change. 1. Promotion of Low- or Zero-Emission Energy Technologies: The report emphasizes the importance of transitioning from conventional CO2-emitting fossil fuel energy technologies to low- or zero-emission alternatives such as wind, solar, nuclear, and biofuels. This transition, alongside adopting energy efficiency measures, is crucial for reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. 2. Enhancement of Atmospheric CO2 Removal: Effective strategies include changing land-use and management practices to increase carbon storage in plants, trees, and soils, and developing technologies for capturing atmospheric CO2. 3. Implementation of Policy Instruments for Emission Reductions: It's vital to utilize policy instruments like emissions pricing, regulations and standards, subsidies, and public funding for research and development. These tools can significantly drive down emissions and spur innovation in low-carbon technologies. 4. Regulating and Monitoring GHG Emissions: Setting strict regulations and standards for GHG emissions, particularly from fossil fuel combustion, which accounts for a significant portion of U.S. emissions, is essential. 5. Encouragement of Public and Private Sector Participation: Collaborative efforts in both the public and private sectors are key to achieving substantial emission reductions. As your constituent, I urge you to consider these recommendations for legislative action. Climate change poses a significant risk, and the time for decisive action is now.
