On August 26, 2026, the Trump administration designated the Italian tech collective Autistici/Inventati (A/I) — creators of the Noblogs platform used by over 10,000 groups worldwide—as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist”. Their crime? Providing encrypted email, web hosting, and secure communication tools to activists.
This is an assault on free speech and digital privacy. The State Department admits A/I committed no violent act—they simply offered “untraceable” services the U.S. government can’t monitor. Now, their domains are suspended, and users face a September 25 deadline to abandon the platform or face civil and criminal penalties.
Congress must act immediately:
1. Hold Oversight Hearings – Investigate the State and Treasury Departments’ use of counterterrorism authority to target lawful digital infrastructure. No platform should be branded “terrorist” for hosting protected speech.
2. Demand Full Justification – Require the administration to produce evidence that A/I provided “material support” to terrorism—not merely a platform for unpopular views.
3. Amend the Material Support Statute – Clarify that providing secure communication tools alone does not constitute “material support” to terrorism. Free speech and privacy are not crimes.
4. Reject the TikTok Precedent – As with the TikTok ban, this is a foreign-policy pretext to force users onto more easily monitored platforms. Congress must not allow terrorism law to become a censorship weapon.
To those who say this is about national security: A/I has operated transparently since 2001. Their motto is “Socialize knowledge without founding power”. Suppressing digital privacy undermines the security of every American who values free expression.
Over 7,000 blogs, including libraries, protest coalitions, and anti-fascist research groups, are now at risk. This is a grassroots crisis. In 2026, voters are watching.
