I am writing to express my deep concern over the disgraceful treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by President Trump and Vice President JD Vance during his visit to the Oval Office. Their demeaning and dismissive behavior was not only an insult to a wartime leader but also a profound embarrassment to the United States on the global stage. This moment will be remembered as yet another indication that America is retreating from its role as a world leader.
For decades, the U.S. has been a beacon of democracy and a defender of those fighting against tyranny. Yet, as European leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine, the U.S. administration chose instead to humiliate an ally and, in doing so, signaled to the world that America is no longer reliable. The words of EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas—“The free world needs a new leader”—should be a wake-up call. Our allies are beginning to look elsewhere for leadership, and history has shown that when the U.S. abdicates its role, instability follows.
It is unacceptable that our nation would turn its back on a country fighting for its survival against Russian aggression. By treating Zelenskyy with contempt, this administration has emboldened Vladimir Putin and weakened the credibility of the U.S. as a defender of democracy. If we continue down this path, the long-standing alliances that have kept global stability in place for generations will erode, and the consequences will be dire.
I urge you to speak out against this reckless and short-sighted approach to foreign policy. Congress must reaffirm America’s commitment to Ukraine and our leadership on the world stage. The world is watching, and history will judge how we respond in this critical moment.
