An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress

Keep American Promises - Support Ukraine

17 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I write as an American who believes our nation must keep its word and uphold the principles that define us — the rule of law, the defense of sovereign nations, and protection of innocent civilians. Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, an act the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly condemned and that the world has treated as aggression. Since that invasion, independent human-rights organizations and international courts have documented grave abuses by Russian forces — indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure, forced transfers of children, torture, summary executions, sexual violence, and other conduct that amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity. These findings are the basis for international investigations, including arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court. The weight of the evidence demands accountability. The United States has rightly been a leader in supporting Ukraine’s defense and sustaining its government and people through military, economic, and humanitarian assistance. That support is not charity — it is protection of democracy and a necessary investment in global security. To date the U.S. has supplied tens of billions in military assistance and well over a hundred billion dollars in emergency funding to help Ukraine survive and recover. These authorizations and transfers must be honored in full, without political delay or conditional withholding that would hand advantage to an aggressor. Therefore I demand that you, as a representative of the American people, do the following now: • Fulfill and expedite the military and economic assistance Congress has authorized, ensuring Ukraine can defend its people and restore basic services. • Preserve and strengthen sanctions and export controls that deny Russia the economic and military resources it needs to continue the war. • Support international accountability by cooperating with independent investigations, including the ICC and European human-rights mechanisms, and by refusing to provide diplomatic or economic relief to individuals or entities credibly implicated in war crimes. • Sustain and expand humanitarian relief and refugee assistance so that civilians displaced or harmed by this war receive lifesaving care. • Ensure robust congressional oversight and transparency for all assistance so taxpayers know how money and equipment are used and that policymakers can evaluate effectiveness. History will judge how the United States responds when democracy is attacked and civilians are suffering. We must choose to stand by our commitments — not abandon them — because failing to do so rewards aggression, endangers our allies, and undermines long-term U.S. security and moral leadership. Act now to keep America’s promises to Ukraine and to ensure that those who wage and enable this war face consequences, not concessions.
