The House of Representatives' continuing resolution would extend government funding through September but includes concerning provisions that should be reconsidered. Increasing defense spending and funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement while decreasing non-defense spending is misguided and fails to prioritize the needs of the American people. The bill appears to prop up the military-industrial complex and expand inhumane immigration enforcement instead of investing in vital domestic priorities. Furthermore, the six-month duration could grant the administration unchecked authority to reallocate funds without Congressional oversight. A short-term continuing resolution would be preferable to allow proper scrutiny and negotiation on a full-year spending package that better aligns with the nation's values and interests. Rushing through a flawed long-term bill out of fear of a shutdown would be an abrogation of Congress' power of the purse. While shutdowns are disruptive, legislators were elected to make difficult decisions in service of their constituents, not take the path of least resistance. Stand firm in demanding a responsible, humanitarian budget that truly serves all Americans. The convenience of avoiding a shutdown does not justify enabling policies and spending priorities that undermine justice and human rights.
