Uphold Veto on AZ SB1003 to Protect Student Rights and School Safety

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I am writing to express my strong support for upholding the Governor's veto of Arizona Senate Bill 1003 from the 2025 legislative session. This bill, which sought to restrict bathroom and changing room access based on sex assigned at birth, would have had severe negative consequences for our schools and students. SB1003, sponsored by Senator John Kavanagh, was vetoed by the Governor on May 12, 2025, after passing through both chambers of the legislature. The bill's attempt to define "sex" solely based on genitalia and genetics at birth is overly simplistic and fails to account for the complex realities of gender identity. Moreover, it would have exposed schools to potential lawsuits, creating an unnecessary legal burden on our education system. The Governor's veto was a crucial step in protecting the rights and dignity of all Arizona students, particularly those who are transgender or gender non-conforming. Forcing students to use facilities that don't align with their gender identity can lead to increased harassment, discrimination, and mental health issues. Schools should be safe and inclusive environments for all students, not places where they feel ostracized or threatened. Furthermore, the threat of legal action against schools for violations of this proposed law would have created a climate of fear and uncertainty. Our educators and administrators should be focused on providing quality education, not navigating complex and potentially discriminatory bathroom policies. I urge you to stand firm in support of the Governor's decision and resist any attempts to override this veto. Our state should be moving towards greater inclusivity and understanding, not regressing into discriminatory practices that harm vulnerable students and burden our school systems. The veto of SB1003 aligns with the principles of equality and respect for all individuals. By upholding this veto, you will be sending a clear message that Arizona values the well-being and rights of all its students, regardless of their gender identity. Let's focus on creating supportive, inclusive educational environments that allow all students to thrive.
