Opposing Harmful Budget Cuts to Medicaid and Social Programs

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the recent budget resolution passed by the House of Representatives, which directs the Energy and Commerce Committee to identify at least $880 billion in cuts over the next decade. While the resolution does not explicitly mention Medicaid, the magnitude of these cuts suggests that Medicaid will inevitably be affected, potentially leading to stricter eligibility requirements, reduced benefits, or loss of coverage for millions of Americans who rely on this vital program.
This budget resolution also proposes $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, primarily benefiting the wealthiest individuals and corporations, while mandating $2 trillion in federal spending reductions over the next ten years. Alarmingly, it includes a $300 billion increase in funding for national defense and border security, further highlighting a prioritization of military spending over essential social services.
Medicaid serves as a critical safety net for low-income families, children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Cuts of this magnitude could force states to reduce eligibility, eliminate benefits, or impose additional burdens on already vulnerable populations. For instance, states like New York and Kentucky could experience significant increases in uninsured residents if these cuts are implemented.
Moreover, the proposed tax cuts are expected to disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Americans, potentially exacerbating income inequality. Funding these tax cuts through reductions in essential programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security undermines the well-being of millions who depend on these services. As noted by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, such a budget would increase costs and hardship for many while providing significant tax benefits to the affluent.
I urge you to oppose any legislation that threatens the integrity of Medicaid and other crucial social programs. Instead, I ask that you advocate for a balanced approach that prioritizes the health and economic stability of all Americans, ensuring that budgetary decisions do not disproportionately impact our most vulnerable citizens.
