An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Safeguarding Employee Speech in News Media

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

Congress must act to ensure that private corporations controlling multiple national news and media outlets cannot silence or punish employees for exercising their right to free speech. The recent firing of Stephen Colbert and the censoring of Jimmy Kimmel demonstrate how corporate media consolidation gives a handful of companies the power to suppress voices that challenge hate and hold the powerful accountable. Protecting the free expression of journalists, comedians, and commentators is essential to a healthy democracy.
