An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Demand Congressional Action Against Federal Takeover of State Elections

I am writing to demand that you oppose any federal effort to nationalize or federally control state election administration and to express my alarm at Congress's inadequate response to this threat. During a recent interview with Dan Bongino on Monday, President Trump called on Republicans to "take over" and "nationalize" voting in "at least many, 15 places," claiming that certain states are "so crooked" in counting votes. This proposal fundamentally contradicts our constitutional framework, yet I have seen no emergency hearings, no immediate resolutions of condemnation, and no coordinated congressional defense of state sovereignty. The Constitution explicitly grants states the authority to conduct federal elections through the elections clause. Any attempt to federalize election administration would require overturning this foundational principle of federalism that has governed our democracy since its inception. When the Executive branch openly advocates for unconstitutional seizure of state powers, Congress has a duty to respond with immediate and forceful opposition. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accurately described Trump's proposal as "outlandishly illegal" on the Senate floor, but words alone are insufficient. The timing makes this even more urgent. All House seats and 35 Senate seats will be contested in the 2026 midterm elections. Trump has previously stated that Republicans must win the midterms or he will "get impeached," revealing that these proposals are motivated by political self-interest rather than election security. The justification relies on false claims about noncitizen voting, which experts confirm is incredibly rare and already illegal under federal law. Last week's FBI seizure of original 2020 voting records from the Fulton County Elections and Operations Hub in Georgia demonstrates the continued pursuit of unfounded fraud allegations. I demand that you publicly oppose any legislation or executive action that would federalize election administration, introduce or co-sponsor legislation explicitly prohibiting federal takeover of state election systems, and hold hearings on this constitutional threat. Our democracy requires Congress to defend its constitutional authority and the sovereignty of states.
