Dear Representatives and Senators,
The time is past to act on gun reform. As Dan Rather said, “Remember the catch phrase, “It’s the economy, stupid?” Maybe there’s a similar unifying principle for school shootings. Is it the number of doors? Armed teachers? Video games? No. I think it may be something else.”
It’s the guns. YES we need reform on health care, mental health, broken homes, and child safety strategies; but let’s start with the guns.
EVERY TIME MEANINGFUL GUN RESPONSIBILITY LEGISLATION IS PASSED THERE IS A DECREASE IN GUN VIOLENCE.
I need you to understand that we value our FREEDOM TO LIVE and our CHILDREN more than we value stockpiling assault rifles in our sheds. (I would say basements, but we live in Louisiana.)
WE ARE educators, doctors, nurses, writers, public service workers, and stay at home parents. WE ARE Republicans, Independents, and Democrats. We are of different levels of income, cultural backgrounds, and religious beliefs. WE ARE VOTERS. AND WE ARE WATCHING TO SEE WHAT *ACTION* you will take to make this country safer for us and those we love.
WE WANT THE SAME PROTECTION FOR OUR CHILDREN THAT THE NRA GAVE PRESIDENT TRUMP.
“Why can someone who can’t buy a beer buy a gun of any kind?” asks Gary Chambers Jr., and we want to know that answer, too. “You don’t trust them with a drink, but you do with bullets?”
Many of us are gun owners. We don’t mind background checks. We don’t mind waiting periods. Because WE AREN'T PLANNING TO GO OUT AND HARM SOMEONE.
Here’s the thing. The news cycle may move on, but we aren’t. We are committed to writing you every week of every year until we see change. And if we don’t, we are committed to voting for somebody who will.
Bet on it.
You don’t have to agree with our suggested actions, but YOU DO HAVE TO TAKE ACTION.
It is, quite literally – your job.
Sincerely,
Jaya McSharma, MD and committed voters all over Louisiana
