Congress Must Oppose Destruction Of Iran’s Power Grid
32 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!
As your constituent, I urge you to state clearly now that Congress will not support any U.S. action to destroy Iran’s electrical infrastructure.
Power systems are civilian life-support systems - they sustain hospitals, water and sewage treatment, food preservation, and basic public safety. Their destruction would predictably harm millions of civilians and risk drawing the United States into a broader and more dangerous regional conflict. This must not happen.
ATTACKS WOULD TRIGGER DANGEROUS ESCALATION
Targeting national infrastructure invites retaliation. Iranian officials have already signaled potential responses against energy and water systems across the region.
Such escalation could threaten U.S. personnel, allies, and global energy markets. It could also strengthen adversaries, normalize similar attacks in future conflicts, and backfire strategically.
MILLIONS WOULD FACE LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONS
Recent reporting indicates that President Trump has threatened to “obliterate” Iranian power plants in response to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The consequences are immediate and well understood. Hospitals can lose power within days. Water systems can fail. Food supplies can spoil. Vulnerable populations can face life-threatening conditions.
Millions of civilians could be affected through cascading nationwide infrastructure failure. These are not speculative risks - they are documented outcomes when electrical grids are disabled.
ATTACKING CIVILIAN INFRASTRUCTURE RISKS VIOLATING INTERNATIONAL LAW AND DAMAGING U.S. CREDIBILITY
International humanitarian law requires distinction and proportionality and protects systems essential to civilian survival. When an attack foreseeably causes widespread loss of electricity, water, and medical care, serious legal and moral concerns are raised and U.S. credibility is damaged.
CONGRESS MUST ACT TO PREVENT CIVILIAN HARM
Americans do not support actions that knowingly impose large-scale harm on civilians or trigger avoidable escalation.
I urge you to take the following steps:
(1) Publicly oppose any U.S. targeting of civilian electrical infrastructure and make clear that Congress will scrutinize any such action.
(2) Require immediate clarification from the Administration regarding any plans, legal justification, and civilian-impact assessments.
(3) Advance oversight hearings and reporting requirements on any contemplated attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran.
(4) Oppose any authorization, funding, or operational support for actions that would foreseeably result in widespread civilian harm.
Thank you.
