Protect the Boundary Waters from toxic destructive mining.
Rep Stauber's latest assault on this precious unspoiled wilderness could pass with a simple majority. It would cause irreparable ruin and allow short term private profiteering by his foreign big mining cronies to rape, pillage, and pollute our shared precious resource, the BWCA.
I ASK YOU TO VOTE NO ON HR 978.
Let me remind you that the annual plot from tourism in the Boundary Waters is greater than the profits from mining will be.
Yes, it's true:
Boundary Water Tourism will bring in more revenues that ruinous polluting mining.
Stauber's bill would benefit a rich foreign mining magnate.
It aims to reverse the Biden administration's 20-year mining ban near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) by rescinding protections, reinstating canceled leases for Twin Metals Minnesota,
and fast-tracking copper-nickel mining approvals, directly threatening the wilderness with sulfide-ore mining pollution.
The bill is destructive and wicked because it (1) rescinds Protections: It would undo Public Land Order 7917, removing the 20-year moratorium on mining in the BWCA's headwaters.
(2) It reinstates Leases: It forces the reissuance of previously revoked federal mining leases for Twin Metals, allowing for expedited approval of mine plans.
(3) It bypasses Review: The bill would override the Forest Service's authority to deny consent for mineral leases and limit judicial review.---
Instead of allowing this greedy destructive profiteering, please support the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act, which aims for permanent protection.
