Protect children from the harmful effects of social media

The mental health crisis affecting youth due to excessive social media use is a serious issue that requires urgent action. Research has clearly shown that high levels of social media engagement correlate with increased rates of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and sleep disruptions among adolescents. Despite this mounting evidence, social media platforms have failed to provide adequate transparency about these risks. AB 56 proposes a necessary and effective solution by requiring social media companies to prominently display Surgeon General-endorsed warning labels to all users. These labels will appear upon first log-in and at least once weekly for a minimum of 90 seconds, ensuring consistent dissemination of crucial public health information. By mandating clear and actionable disclosures, this legislation empowers families to make informed decisions that prioritize the well-being of their children. Social media companies have demonstrated an unwillingness to address the mental health crisis they have exacerbated, instead prioritizing profits over user welfare. It is the responsibility of lawmakers to protect young people from these harmful and exploitative practices. AB 56 represents a critical step towards holding social media platforms accountable and safeguarding the health of future generations. I urge you to support this groundbreaking legislation and join the fight to combat the youth mental health crisis linked to social media use.
