The weaponization of the term "antisemitism" by those in power to stifle free speech and persecute minorities is deeply concerning. Deporting individuals like Mahmoud Khalil, who has committed no crime, under the guise of combating antisemitism sets a dangerous precedent that undermines constitutional rights and enables authoritarianism. This conflation obfuscates the real threat of rising antisemitism by stripping the term of its meaning. Rather than genuinely addressing hate and discrimination, these actions seem aimed at suppressing dissent and criticism of certain policies, particularly regarding Israel/Palestine. Scapegoating universities, which have historically been targets during periods of antisemitic sentiment, is likewise troubling. Wielding accusations of antisemitism as a weapon against political opponents is itself an antisemitic tactic reminiscent of past rhetoric used to consolidate power. We must remain vigilant against the manipulation of this loaded term to gaslight the public and provide cover for human rights violations. Protecting Jewish communities requires firmly upholding democratic values and civil liberties for all people, not exploiting valid concerns to enable draconian measures that ultimately put minorities at greater risk. Preserving the rule of law and a robust public discourse is vital to combating true antisemitism and all forms of hate.
