I am writing to urge you to re-invite Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, to address Congress. Her insights are crucial for understanding the humanitarian crisis in the region, and Congress would benefit from her informed perspective on achieving peace through justice.
Ms. Albanese’s commitment to human rights and international law should not be mischaracterized as antisemitic. Her advocacy for justice-based solutions aims to end violence and ensure accountability. When she referred to the influence of the “Jewish Lobby,” she echoed terminology frequently used by Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It’s essential to recognize that Israel is a Zionist project, and criticism of Zionism or Israel’s policies is not synonymous with opposition to Judaism or Jewish people. Anti-Zionism is a stance rooted in opposition to a political ideology, not a reflection of antisemitic beliefs.
In fact, numerous Jewish organizations have publicly supported Ms. Albanese’s role and mission, affirming that her advocacy for human rights aligns with Jewish values of justice and peace. Her stance resonates with a significant portion of the Jewish community that seeks a just solution for all people in the region. By dismissing her, Congress would miss a critical opportunity to hear from a UN-appointed advocate dedicated to the principle that justice, not violence, is the foundation of security.
I strongly urge you to re-invite Ms. Albanese to address Congress. Her insights are invaluable for policymakers working to foster real security and human rights in the region.
I look forward to your courageous action regarding this important request.
