Pass national voting rights legislation to protect democracy

It is clear that immediate action must be taken to prevent far-right extremists from undermining the integrity of elections at the state level. The recent revelations about the potential for a takeover of Georgia's election board by right-wing activists should sound alarm bells. This board's new radical conservative majority is already working to implement rules that could empower local officials to refuse or delay certification of election results they deem questionable, despite no evidence of fraud. They are also reopening investigations into baseless allegations against the 2020 election that have already been thoroughly examined. This partisan election subversion must be stopped. Congress needs to pass robust national voting rights legislation to establish strong federal protections and safeguards for free and fair elections in every state. Without such laws, the foundation of American democracy is under serious threat from those seeking to overturn legitimate election outcomes for partisan gain. The right to vote and have that vote counted accurately is a cornerstone of self-governance. We cannot allow cynical actors at any level to erode this fundamental principle or install a system of minority rule by undermining the will of the people. Decisive action to enshrine voting rights protections into law is urgently needed to thwart these dangerous anti-democratic efforts.
