An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Fund Public Education—Stop Diverting Taxpayer Dollars to Private Schools

I am writing as your constituent to demand that you fulfill one of your most basic responsibilities: adequately fund public education for every student in this country. That means strengthening our public schools—not siphoning off critical resources to subsidize private and religious institutions. I urge you to support and cosponsor the Keep Public Funds in Public Schools Act and repeal the national tax-credit voucher program created under H.R. 1. If allowed to take effect in 2027, this program will do lasting harm to the very foundation of our education system. Let’s be clear about what this policy does. It offers individuals a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 in exchange for routing money through intermediary organizations that ultimately fund private school tuition. This is not a neutral tax policy—it is a direct diversion of public funds. Every dollar redirected this way is a dollar taken from the public schools that educate 90% of American students. Public schools are already underfunded, overburdened, and expected to meet the needs of every child who walks through their doors. They are anchors of our communities—especially in rural areas, where schools are often among the largest employers and serve as vital social and economic hubs. Weakening them weakens entire communities. Private schools, by contrast, are not held to the same standards. They are not bound by key civil rights protections such as Title VI, Title IX, or the Americans with Disabilities Act. Students with disabilities risk losing essential protections guaranteed under IDEA and Section 504. These are not minor technicalities—they are fundamental rights. Public dollars should never fund systems that can legally exclude, discriminate, or turn students away. America cannot and should not fund two separate education systems—one public, accountable, and open to all, and another private, selective, and publicly subsidized. That is not equity. That is abandonment. If you are serious about opportunity, about economic growth, and about the future of this country, then invest in the schools that serve all children. Fully fund public education. Pay teachers what they deserve. Ensure every classroom has the resources it needs. Stop diverting taxpayer money into schemes that erode the very system most families rely on. The American people are watching. We expect you to act. Support and cosponsor the Keep Public Funds in Public Schools Act. Protect public education. Do your job.
