Student Visa Bans and Embassy Cuts Will Cost Us More Than We Know

The recent actions of the Trump administration—specifically halting new student visa interviews and proposing the closure of nearly 30 U.S. embassies and consulates—attack our diplomatic and educational foundations. These measures undermine America’s global standing and threaten our economy and national security.
On May 27, 2025, the administration suspended new student visa interviews, planning to implement mandatory social media vetting for applicants. This policy shift could deter international students, who contribute over $44 billion annually to our economy and enrich our academic institutions (Reuters, May 27, 2025).
Additionally, a proposal to close several embassies, including those in France, Germany, and South Korea, would limit consular services and hinder support for U.S. citizens abroad, ceding influence to global competitors (Boundless, April 23, 2025).
These actions are politically motivated and compromise our interests. By restricting educational opportunities and diminishing our diplomatic presence, we risk isolating ourselves.
I urge you to oppose these harmful policies, protect our embassies, and uphold the values that make America a beacon of opportunity and freedom.
