Protect Trans Americans From License Cancellation Laws

Kansas just became the first state to retroactively cancel driver's licenses for transgender residents. I'm asking you to work at the federal level to prevent this from spreading nationwide. No one should have to choose between their safety and being legally recognized. Kansas invalidated approximately 1,700 licenses that had been legally changed since 2007, forcing trans residents to surrender their IDs with no notice or grace period. Attorney Harper Seldin explained the real impact: these licenses now announce to every bank teller, hotel clerk, and poll worker that someone is transgender. Trans people already face more harassment and discrimination when their IDs don't match their appearance. This law deliberately increases that danger. The implementation has been chaotic. Andrea Ellis received a cancellation letter even though she only changed her legal name, not her gender marker. Hundreds received letters saying their documents were "invalid immediately" and threatening additional penalties. Judge James McCabria refused to block the law, claiming there isn't enough evidence trans people will face harassment, ignoring decades of documented discrimination. Other states are watching Kansas. This isn't about definitions. It's about forcing people out of public life. Pass federal protections to ensure states cannot retroactively invalidate identity documents that were legally issued.
