The administration’s strategy of using interagency agreements to shift civil rights enforcement and gut regional offices threatens essential protections against race, sex, and disability discrimination for millions of students. Dispersing these core functions away from the Department of Education undermines institutional expertise, drastically stalls case resolutions, and leaves vulnerable students without a reliable federal safety net. Because the executive branch cannot legally dissolve a department established by Congress, lawmakers must step in.
