An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Student Debt Crisis

Like millions of my fellow Americans, I am strapped with insurmountable student debt. Over the last few years, I have paid a significant amount toward my loans, however, that money has barely made a dent in what I owe. I simply want the opportunity to pay off what I borrowed, but this is next to impossible with the predatory interest rates that are holding so many of us back. I believe there is a way for us to get through this student debt crisis together using an approach that is fair and effective for everyone. I respectfully request that you consider supporting legislation and/or executive action that would place an immediate and permanent freeze on student loan interest, and, further, apply ALL interest that has already been paid by each borrower toward that borrower's original principal amount. In a single step, this could correct the harmful impact of predatory student loan interest rates of the past and give people a fighting chance to pay off what the borrowed. Also, because no actual forgiveness or cancellation is involved, this approach is more likely to find acceptance across the political spectrum.
