The SAVE act is dangerous, and WE THE PEOPLE must stop it at all costs. Republicans would have you believe that the SAVE act is directly related to protecting our voting rights. They’d have you believe that it ensures that undocumented immigrants cannot falsely cast a ballot, that Russian bots cannot skew the people’s choices, and that no one will be able to vote twice. However, if we break it down- undocumented immigrants are not the problem. Russian bots can still hack machines… and so far, the only people caught voting twice were… *wait for it*… registered republicans. So what is it really about? Well, married women often take their husband’s surnames. SAVE requires your current ID to match your birth certificate to the letter. What options does a woman have then? Well, she can shell out several hundred dollars for a passport, or she can shell out several hundred dollars to legally change her name back. Both of these options directly exclude women of limited financial means, and both require women to be able to find the time to accomplish all of the tasks required to accomplish the goal. Many women work. Government agencies are open during those same hours. If the money required is already an issue, taking time off will most certainly discourage them even more. Additionally, women aside, what happens to the trans community who have changed their names to match their lived-gender? What happens to the Muslim converts who have chosen new names to coincide with their religious beliefs? What happens to adopted children? What happens to victims of domestic abuse who have changed their identities for safety measures? Do you see a theme in the types of people who would find the voting process more difficult or even unattainable? They’re all people whose voting practices lean left. If we want to save the country, we need to stop the SAVE act. Thank you.
