An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Block the Johnson Tract Mine in Lake Clark National Park - Alaska

896 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!

I’m writing to ask you to legislatively block the proposed Johnson Tract mine in the middle of this Alaskan National park. We cannot allow this kind of greed to destroy our natural wilderness. This proposed mine has implications far beyond the one park, there have been attempts to mine and drill in many other parks and public spaces, including Yellowstone! This is a red line, for Alaska and every other state. In the latest environmentally dangerous move, Contango Ore is pushing to open a gold, silver, zinc, copper, and lead mine inside Lake Clark National Park, with road construction planned for this year and mining targeted to begin by 2029. What’s to stop them? The Roadless Rule is being kicked aside. This project threatens the Johnson River's water quality through acid mine drainage and industrial runoff, puts endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales at greater risk, and would disrupt the coastal brown bear population that multi-generational fishing and wildlife businesses depend on. The National Park Service, Army Corps of Engineers, and Alaska Department of Natural Resources all have a say in what happens here. The Corps already faces a federal lawsuit for failing to adequately consider beluga whale impacts when it issued Contango a permit. That lawsuit should be a signal to every agency involved to slow down and scrutinize this project far more carefully. A mine inside a national park is not a routine permitting matter. Please use every tool available to oppose permits for the Johnson Tract project and protect Lake Clark from industrial mining. Or other wilderness areas will be ruined, one by one. Thank you.
