Opposition to Senate Bill 2 – School Voucher Program

I am writing to express my strong opposition to Senate Bill 2, the proposed school voucher program currently being considered in the Texas Legislature. While I support efforts to improve educational opportunities for all children, I am deeply concerned that this bill would divert critical funding away from public schools, ultimately harming the vast majority of Texas students.
Public schools serve as the foundation of our communities, providing education, meals, special education services, and support for students from all backgrounds. By funneling taxpayer dollars into private institutions€”many of which lack accountability, transparency, and requirements to serve all students€”this bill undermines our public education system rather than strengthening it. Texas already faces significant challenges in adequately funding our public schools, and a voucher program would only exacerbate these issues.
Furthermore, this bill disproportionately benefits families who already have the means to send their children to private schools while leaving behind those who rely on public education. Students with disabilities, in particular, may face reduced protections under private school policies, as these institutions are not bound by the same federal laws that ensure equitable education in public schools.
Rather than implementing a costly voucher program that will primarily benefit a select few, I urge you to invest in fully funding our public schools, increasing teacher salaries, reducing classroom sizes, and expanding support services that directly impact student success. Texas families need strong public schools, not policies that further erode their funding and accessibility.
I respectfully ask you to oppose Senate Bill 2 and any similar legislation that undermines public education. Please stand with Texas students, educators, and families by ensuring that public schools remain a top priority in our state.
Thank you for your time and service to our community. I look forward to your response and to seeing you take a stand in support of Texas public schools.
