Progress v Regress: how your complicity has reversed centuries of forward action

History will judge not only the actions of this administration, but also your willingness to stand by while decades of American progress were weakened.
Over the last century, our nation fought hard to secure safer workplaces, end child labor, establish Social Security, create Medicare and Medicaid, protect civil rights, safeguard voting rights, preserve our air and water, strengthen consumer protections, and expand access to health care. These achievements were not gifts—they were earned through generations of sacrifice and public service.
Today, many Americans believe those gains are being steadily eroded. Environmental protections have been scaled back. Federal agencies have been weakened through staffing and budget cuts. Labor protections have been challenged. Social safety-net programs face reductions. Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have been curtailed. Immigration policies have become more restrictive, and longstanding federal roles in education and public health have been questioned or reduced.
Whether you supported these policies or not, Congress has a constitutional duty to provide oversight and serve as a check on executive power. Too often, that duty has appeared secondary to partisan loyalty or political calculation.
Every generation inherits the work of those who came before it. Yours will be remembered for whether it defended the institutions and protections that Americans spent generations building—or whether it allowed them to be dismantled through silence and inaction.
The American people did not elect Congress to be spectators. They elected you to debate, investigate, legislate, and hold every administration accountable, regardless of party. If you believe a policy benefits the nation, defend it openly. If you believe it harms the public, have the courage to oppose it.
History rarely asks who remained politically comfortable. It asks who fulfilled their oath to support and defend the Constitution and to protect the people they were elected to serve.
The time for passive observation has passed. The country deserves representatives who are willing to lead with integrity, exercise meaningful oversight, and place the interests of the American people above party.
