Just this month, ICE agents deployed deadly force during routine vehicle stops in separate, fatal encounters in Houston, Texas, and Biddeford, Maine—killing Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero. Shockingly, records reveal that neither victim was the actual target of the active enforcement operations. Stripping the F.B.I. of its investigative role eliminates vital external checks and balances, fostering an environment of total impunity for immigration officers who already operate without body-worn cameras.
