Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
I guess I’m confused. I always thought the best time to address fiscal issues in my own life was to decide beforehand if a debt should be incurred or not, not after the fact when the party ends and the headache begins. And the credit card bill comes due.
Who knew I should actually be able to negotiate with Mastercard by just saying no?
Isn’t that what’s happening with this ridiculously dangerous standoff about raising the US debit ceiling? To pay for the party we’ve already had? Or am I missing something?
Shouldn’t negotiations be made before the spending was spent?
If this is an example of the people getting the government they deserve, I think we’re in trouble. We’re in trouble if we have lawmakers, leaders of the country, either not understanding how this works, or way worse, not caring just to burn it all down. In that event, I guess we’re reaping what we’ve sowed.
But I’m also so hoping that those of you with any institutional memory, or regard for America’s reputation or credit rating or economy, will be able to either educate or influence those among you who are waging a purely political war on this front.
It’s one thing for the American people to not know all the nuances of what it takes to keep the country going. It’s quite another for those who sign up to serve the country to not know. Or care. And use their power to wreak havoc.
I think that’s called revenge.
I sure hope there are still some adults in the room.
