Protect Michigan's climate, housing funds from partisan obstruction

The Trump administration's decision to freeze the $20 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund threatens important climate and housing initiatives in Michigan. This funding was poised to deliver hundreds of millions to our state for projects that would create jobs, lower energy costs, and address our housing shortage through energy-efficient construction and renovation. The freeze jeopardizes plans like a $35 million partnership between Michigan Saves and the state housing authority to build and rehabilitate affordable rental units with energy efficiency in mind. It also casts doubt on $24 million meant to incorporate energy-saving measures into the $180 million overhaul of Detroit's Villages at Parkside public housing. These programs leverage private investment, providing a high return on public dollars while cutting emissions and utility bills. Green banks are a proven approach, with Michigan's own green bank facilitating over $600 million in home energy projects since 2009. The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund promised to build on that successful model. I urge you to take action to ensure Michigan receives the climate and housing funds it was allocated through the Inflation Reduction Act. These programs will yield significant economic and environmental benefits for our communities. Blocking the funds based on unsubstantiated allegations of fraud is an unacceptable obstruction of Congressionally approved initiatives to tackle pressing issues like climate change and housing affordability.
