HB 2889
I strenuously object to HB 2889, a bill that would “slash property taxes to nothing for straight married couples with 10 children. No tax break for gay or divorced couples. Straight married couples with fewer than 10 children would also receive a break on property taxes, but just not as much. The threshold at which a couple would save a little extra come tax time starts at four, which gives you a 40% cut.”
This bill clearly violates federal law which prohibits discrimination for, among various things, government services, on the basis of family status. It discriminates against gay and divorced couples. It also discriminates against families with less than four children.
The only acceptable approach to property tax relief is one that applies to all homeowners, period.
