An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Reject anti-LGBTQ+ education bill, uphold equality for all students

The So-Called "Empowering Parents Act" (HB5327) This proposed legislation raises serious concerns about discrimination and violating the rights of LGBTQ+ students and school employees. Defining "biological sex" narrowly based solely on characteristics observed at birth fails to account for the complex realities of gender identity and expression. Prohibiting the use of correct pronouns and restricting access to facilities based on this narrow definition promotes harm and marginalization of transgender and non-binary individuals. Furthermore, the vague language around "radical gender theory" and "sexually explicit materials" could enable censorship of factual information and stifle open discussions in educational settings. Schools should be inclusive environments that respect diversity and protect vulnerable populations from discrimination. I urge you to reject this bill in its current form and instead support policies that uphold the dignity, safety, and equal treatment of all students and staff regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.
