Support Joint Federal-State Investigation Into Minneapolis Border Patrol Shooting
I am writing to express my strong support for Senator Bill Cassidy's call for a comprehensive joint federal and state investigation into the fatal shooting of Alex Jeffrey Pretti by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis. Senator Cassidy is correct that the credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake, and this situation demands immediate accountability and transparency.
Alex Jeffrey Pretti was a 37-year-old U.S. citizen who worked as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA. He was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry and had no serious criminal history. His death during a federal immigration operation on Saturday marks the second fatal shooting by federal officers in Minneapolis this month, following the January 7 killing of Renee Nicole Good by ICE officer Jonathan Ross. These incidents have created a constitutional crisis that threatens the fundamental relationship between federal and state law enforcement.
The jurisdictional conflicts are deeply troubling. Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, reported that federal officers blocked state investigators from the scene even after his agency obtained a signed judicial warrant. This obstruction of justice cannot stand in a nation governed by the rule of law. When federal agents prevent state authorities from executing valid warrants, they undermine the very legal framework they claim to uphold.
A joint investigation is the only path forward that can restore public trust and establish the facts. The current standoff between Minnesota officials and federal authorities serves no one's interests and only deepens the crisis. Senator Cassidy's proposal offers a reasonable solution that respects both federal authority and state sovereignty while ensuring accountability.
I urge you to support Senator Cassidy's call for a joint investigation and to work toward establishing clear protocols that prevent such tragic incidents and jurisdictional conflicts in the future. The American people deserve answers, and the families of Alex Jeffrey Pretti and Renee Nicole Good deserve justice.
