The recent Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace is an unprecedented and alarming escalation that demands immediate and decisive action from our government. This is not just a violation of Poland's sovereignty; it's a direct challenge to NATO and the security of Europe as a whole.
On the night of Tuesday into Wednesday, Poland was forced to shoot down Russian drones that entered its airspace during an attack on Ukraine. Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported 19 separate airspace violations, with many drones entering from Belarus. This is a clear and intentional provocation that cannot go unanswered.
The consequences of this incursion are already visible. Debris from one drone damaged a residential building in Wyryki, eastern Poland, while another piece was found near a cemetery in Cześniki. While thankfully no injuries were reported, the potential for loss of life was significant. This incident, coupled with Poland's decision to close its eastern border with Belarus due to upcoming joint Russian-Belarusian military exercises, paints a picture of escalating tensions that require an immediate response.
I urge you to push for stronger measures against Russia, including but not limited to increased military support for Ukraine and Poland, stricter economic sanctions on Russia and Belarus, and a united NATO response invoking Article 4. We must send a clear message that such provocations will not be tolerated and that there will be severe consequences for violating the territorial integrity of NATO members.
Furthermore, I implore you to advocate for a long-term strategy that aims to push Russia back to its pre-2014 borders. This recent incident demonstrates that half-measures and appeasement have failed to deter Putin's aggressive expansionism. It's time for a more assertive approach that truly puts Putin in his place and restores stability to the region.
The security of Europe and the credibility of NATO are at stake. We must act now, decisively and unequivocally, to prevent further escalation and protect our allies. The world is watching, and our response to this provocation will set the tone for future interactions with aggressive regimes worldwide.
