Protect colonoscopies, epidurals, and anesthesia: vote NO on SB 331
27 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!
I'm writing today to ask you to oppose S.B. 331, the HALT Fentanyl Act.
Just like the Patriot Act and the Crime Bill, SB 331 has a catchy name. Who could be opposed to it?
Well, anyone who needs a medical procedure that requires anaesthetia. Anyone who gets an epidural, such as during childbirth.
I personally would like to be able to get a colonoscopy when my doctor recommends it. Twilight sedation for a colonoscopy also uses fentanyl.
Fentanyl is a life saving medication, and it is completely backward and cruel to reclassify it as a Schedule I substance. By definition, Schedule I substances have "no currently accepted medical use" and cannot be used for clinical practice.
I understand your colleagues across the aisle are trying to make you vote "in favor" of fentanyl so they can use it in campaign ads against you.
But you need to understand that if you vote for this bill, you will limit your constituents' access to basic healthcare like colonoscopies, anesthesia during surgeries, and pain meds during childbirth. If your vote causes your constituents to lose access to these vital healthcare services, we will be angry. That is, those of us who are alive to vote for you in the next election.
