Our youngest generation deserves a vibrant community, not to live in fear that once we become disabled and ill, we will be forced into institutions.
As a member of the parenting, childhood education, and caregiving community, I’m writing to ensure that the Senate quickly pass the next reconciliation package with at least $150 billion for Medicaid home-and community-based services.
These services keep valuable members of our community out of institutions so we can live safely in our homes. Particularly as people with disabilities are disproportionately at risk when forced into instutions - partly due to the pandemic, partly due to vulnerability to abuse and exploitation.
We must stop forcibly segregating disabled and ill members of our community in an attempt to hide them away for the comfort of the powerful and privileged. Every member of our community is worthy of human dignity and rights. Our whole community is stronger with us - with all our disabilities and chronic conditions - in it.
The House has already included this funding in the reconciliation package. We just need the Senate to include it too. This is a life and death issue.
Please support HCBS funding for the next reconciliation package and keep disabled & chronically ill members in our communities by passing it quickly. Thank you for your time.
