People are activating foreign immigration law to escape conditions in their own country, and the fact that Canada's urgent processing criteria — designed for those facing harm based on gender identity — is being widely used by Americans should alarm every elected official in this country. No one should have to research passport gender markers in another country's system because their own government has made them feel unsafe. The current political environment has made that a reality for trans people across the United States.
