I urge you to advocate for a peace agreement that centers Ukrainian sovereignty and security rather than accommodating Russian territorial demands. President Zelenskyy's recent peace proposal reveals concerning compromises that fail to address the fundamental issue: Russia initiated this unprovoked invasion and must fully withdraw from all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.
The current draft proposes freezing the contact line across five Ukrainian regions and transforming occupied Donbas areas into free economic zones. Russia has captured most of Luhansk and approximately 70% of Donetsk. These proposals reward Russian aggression by allowing Moscow to retain territorial gains achieved through violence. Any settlement that permits Russia to keep Ukrainian land sets a dangerous precedent that military conquest yields diplomatic rewards.
The proposed management structure for the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant exemplifies this problematic approach. The U.S. suggestion of equal 33% stakes for Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia treats the aggressor and victim as equivalent parties. This is Europe's largest nuclear facility, located on Ukrainian soil, currently under illegal Russian occupation. Russia should have zero stake in managing Ukrainian infrastructure.
While the draft includes security guarantees mirroring NATO's Article 5, these fall short of actual NATO membership. Given Russia's repeated violations of previous agreements and its demonstrated willingness to invade neighboring countries, only full NATO membership provides credible deterrence against future Russian aggression. Security guarantees without NATO membership are merely promises that Russia has proven it will ignore.
I ask you to support a peace framework that requires complete Russian withdrawal to pre-2014 borders, facilitates Ukraine's immediate path to NATO and European Union membership, and rejects any territorial concessions. Russia started this war through imperial ambition. Genuine peace requires holding Russia accountable, not rewarding its conquest with permanent territorial gains or influence over Ukrainian assets.
