I am enraged—not just disappointed—by the Senate’s passage of the One Big Ugly Bill, a grotesque legislative assault that threatens to strip millions of Americans of their healthcare, gut critical programs like Medicaid and SNAP, and lock in permanent tax giveaways for the wealthy at the expense of working people.
This isn’t just bad policy. It’s a full-blown class war. And the response from Democrats so far has been embarrassingly restrained.
Donald Trump is attempting to fashion himself as a modern-day Reagan—with all the cruelty and none of the charm—by destroying the middle class under the illusion of fiscal responsibility. You have an opportunity, and an obligation, to stop this before it reaches President Biden’s desk.
But here’s the truth: you will not win this by playing nice. Republicans aren’t. And every day you wait to strike back loudly, the narrative calcifies. The time for careful messaging is over. It is time to fight dirty, strategically and relentlessly.
Here are the immediate actions I expect you to take:
1. Force public votes on House amendments that eliminate the Medicaid cuts, tax breaks, and work requirement provisions. Put Republicans in vulnerable districts on the record. Make them own this bill, piece by piece.
2. Launch a discharge petition campaign. Begin with 218 members and go public. Target so-called moderate Republicans like Don Bacon, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Marc Molinaro. Make the optics painful.
3. Go scorched-earth with communications. Flood local news, saturate social media, and show up in Republican backyards. Sponsor town halls in swing districts. Put the human cost on full display—families losing care, disabled people left behind, rural hospitals closing.
4. Nationalize the consequences. Work with the DCCC and state parties to fund ads against vulnerable House Republicans now. If they vote for this bill, they should lose their seats. Period.
5. Show your base you are serious. We are tired of statements. We want televised floor speeches, procedural blockades, and legislative knife fights. We want to see fire—not finesse.
This is not just about protecting policy. It is about protecting people from the economic cruelty of a Trump-led Republican Party that has declared open war on the poor, the working class, and the sick.
The One Big Ugly Bill is a disgrace to everything democracy should stand for—and if Democrats fail to destroy it, you will not only lose the trust of your voters, you will lose the country.
We are demanding that you unleash the full arsenal of political warfare at your disposal. Do not coddle the center. Do not concede the narrative. Do not allow the GOP to cloak this greed-fueled attack as reform.
We are watching. And if you do not fight this like your seat depends on it we will ensure you no longer have a seat at the table.
