An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress; State Governors & Legislatures

Urge fair, unbiased treatment of all refugee applicants

5 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

The decision to prioritize South African Afrikaner refugees raises concerns about fairness and equal treatment within the U.S. refugee program. While facing persecution is undoubtedly a valid basis for refugee status, expediting this particular group while leaving others languishing in untenable situations appears to reflect an unsettling bias. The regime change has already severely impacted refugee resettlement efforts, with drastic budget cuts forcing staff reductions and vital services being eliminated or curtailed. Religious groups like the Episcopal Church have even terminated participation over ethical objections to preferential treatment. Allowing entry for one ethnicity while denying others facing dire circumstances seems to contradict the fundamental principles of the refugee program. A more judicious and equitable approach that evaluates all applicants through the same rigorous but unbiased process, providing refuge based solely on documented need, would better uphold America's humanitarian ideals of equal protection. We urge a review of these policies to restore confidence in the integrity of this essential program.
