I am writing to you today as an American citizen deeply alarmed by the escalating disregard for constitutional order and democratic norms by former President Donald Trump, his allies, and the extremist factions emboldened by his rhetoric. We are witnessing a brazen attempt to consolidate power through unconstitutional means—an effort that threatens not just the separation of powers but the very legitimacy of our government. From the mass pardons of violent insurrectionists to the normalization of fascist imagery and intimidation tactics, the last several weeks have laid bare a fundamental truth: Trump and his enablers are not acting in the interest of the American people. They are acting in the interest of personal wealth and power, dismantling the institutions that protect our freedom. Senator Angus King rightly warned that permitting Trump to seize the powers of Congress through unconstitutional impoundment is not just illegal—it is a direct assault on the foundation of our republic. Yet, rather than reining him in, his supporters in Congress continue to enable his abuses, even as the courts reject his actions and the American people turn against his reckless agenda. History has shown us that in times of crisis, the courage of a few can define the course of a nation. In 1950, Senator Margaret Chase Smith stood up against McCarthyism. In 1974, Representative Bill Cohen cast a vote for impeachment against Richard Nixon, despite the threats and political risks. They acted not out of partisanship, but out of duty—to the Constitution and the American people. Now, it is your turn. Will you defend the Constitution and uphold the rule of law, or will you stand by as our nation slides toward authoritarian rule? Will you reaffirm the principles that have guided this republic for nearly 250 years, or will you yield to a man who sees public service as a vehicle for his own enrichment and revenge? There is still time to act. Congress must reassert its authority, investigate these abuses of power, and ensure that no president—current or former—can dismantle our democracy without consequence.
