An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

Vote No on HR 9495

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The proposed H.R. 9495 bill is an alarming overreach that would grant the president sweeping powers to unilaterally target and shut down civil society organizations under the guise of combating "terrorist-supporting" activities. This legislation poses a grave threat to fundamental freedoms, enabling censorship of dissenting voices and critics. It undermines free speech, freedom of the press, and the ability of humanitarian groups to operate. Shuttering nonprofits could have devastating humanitarian consequences. Prominent organizations like the Council on American-Islamic Relations, American Muslims for Palestine, and Oxfam have condemned this bill, warning it could be weaponized to silence opponents and curb political opposition. Oxfam rightly notes it enables the president to circumvent due process and the rule of law. H.R. 9495 is an unacceptable overreach that jeopardizes core democratic values and civil liberties. I urge you to firmly reject this bill and uphold the constitutional rights that undergird a free society.
