An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures (Ind. only)

Oppose tolling all interstate highways in Indiana

5 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

I am writing as a concerned resident to express my strong opposition to the provisions in House Bill 1461 that would facilitate the tolling of existing interstate highways across Indiana. While I understand the state’s need to address a projected $4 billion shortfall in road funding, implementing tolls on our interstates is not the appropriate solution. Such a measure would place an undue financial burden on everyday Hoosiers who rely on these roads for commuting, accessing essential services, and conducting business. Additionally, tolling interstates will inevitably push cost-conscious drivers onto local and state roads in an attempt to avoid tolls. This diversion will lead to increased congestion, more wear and tear on infrastructure that was not designed for heavy through traffic, and a greater need for law enforcement to patrol these routes. Smaller communities like mine will face heightened traffic safety concerns and additional public safety costs, creating further strain on local budgets and resources. Moreover, the potential economic repercussions are significant. Increased transportation costs can lead to higher prices for goods and services, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income families. Small businesses, which are the backbone of our local economy, may struggle to absorb these additional expenses, potentially leading to reduced competitiveness and job losses. Furthermore, the authority granted to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the governor to implement tolls without direct legislative approval raises concerns about transparency and accountability. Decisions of this magnitude should involve comprehensive legislative oversight to ensure they reflect the will and best interests of Indiana’s citizens. I urge you to reconsider the tolling provisions in HB 1461 and explore alternative funding mechanisms that do not compromise the financial well-being of Indiana residents. Investing in our infrastructure is crucial, but it must be achieved through equitable and transparent means. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust you will act in the best interests of your constituents and the state of Indiana.
