Oppose Military Strikes on Venezuela and Block Funding for Unauthorized War

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action against the Trump administration's military strikes on Caracas, Venezuela. These attacks represent an illegal war that violates international law and undermines American security interests. The Trump administration has carried out strikes on Venezuela's capital and abducted President Nicolás Maduro and his wife for trial in New York. Trump announced his administration would "run the country" and stated the oil industry would "spend millions" and "make a lot of money" taking over Venezuela's oil reserves, which represent approximately 17 percent of global reserves, the largest in the world. This is not about national security. This is about corporate profit from seizing another nation's resources. Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, has stated there is no evidence these actions make America safer. Trump has already threatened to expand military action, telling Fox & Friends that "something's going to have to be done with Mexico" and warning Colombian President Gustavo Petro to "watch his ass." Secretary of State Marco Rubio added Cuba to the list, saying people in Havana should be "concerned." I urge you to take four immediate steps. First, publicly condemn these attacks. Second, demand the return of Venezuela's President and First Lady to their country. Third, block federal funds for military operations not directly dedicated to immediate withdrawal of forces. Fourth, support legislation outlawing American companies from assisting or profiting from this illegal war. Bipartisan models already exist, including the No Unauthorized Force in Venezuela Act led by Senators Jeff Merkley and Representative Seth Moulton, and War Power Resolutions led by Senator Tim Kaine. This is an all hands on deck moment. Without widespread opposition from Congress, Trump will expand these military operations to other countries.
