Your Ruling in Louisiana v. Callais Undermines Our Democracy

I am writing to express my profound disappointment and opposition to the Court’s recent ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. By effectively gutting the enforcement mechanism of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, this decision has dismantled a vital tool used for over 60 years to protect the integrity of our multiracial democracy. The Court’s decision to impose a nearly impossible evidentiary burden on those challenging discriminatory maps—while allowing states to hide behind partisan justifications—is a betrayal of the promise of the Fifteenth Amendment.  This ruling ignores the reality of how racial discrimination in voting persists in our country. It leaves millions of voters of color vulnerable to mapmakers who now have a clear roadmap to dilute their political power with impunity.  This decision will be remembered as a dark chapter in the Court’s history, one that prioritizes technical legal gymnastics over the fundamental right of every American to have their voice heard. I am adding my name to the record to ensure the Court knows that its legitimacy is deeply damaged by this abandonment of civil rights.
