HB 1 contains deeply concerning provisions that would negatively impact millions of Americans and disrupt the balance of powers. To begin with it increases the deficit by trillions of dollars. If that isn’t enough of a reason, cutting food assistance by $267 billion and imposing stringent work requirements on SNAP and Medicaid recipients risks leaving vulnerable individuals and families without access to essential services is another. The overhaul of student loans, imposing a tax on university endowments, and the $1,000 "Trump" accounts for newborns are misguided policies that fail to address the real issues facing students and families. Perhaps most alarming is the inclusion of measures aimed at stripping the federal courts of their ability to enforce contempt charges, which would undermine the rule of law and the system of checks and balances. Such a blatant power grab cannot be tolerated in a democratic society. I urge you to reject this overreaching bill and its harmful provisions. Instead, work towards legislation that genuinely uplifts all Americans, preserves vital social safety nets, protects the independence of the judiciary, and safeguards our democratic institutions.
