I am writing to urge you to support age-appropriate LGBTQ+ education in our schools. Recent events have highlighted the critical importance of maintaining inclusive educational practices that reflect the diversity of our society.
In 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that parents could opt out of LGBTQ+ education based on religious beliefs. However, the aftermath of this decision in Montgomery County, Maryland, reveals a striking reality: out of 160,000 students, only 43 families (0.03%) chose to opt out. This minuscule percentage demonstrates that the vast majority of parents recognize the value of LGBTQ+ education for their children.
While some Republican-controlled states have implemented outright bans on LGBTQ+ content in schools, public opinion polls consistently show low support for such restrictive measures. The data from Montgomery County serves as compelling evidence that anti-LGBTQ+ policies are driven by a small minority rather than reflecting widespread public demand.
It is crucial to recognize that inclusive education benefits all students by fostering understanding, empathy, and respect for diverse identities. By supporting age-appropriate LGBTQ+ education, we ensure that our schools remain spaces of learning and growth for every child, regardless of their background or identity.
I strongly urge you to stand against any attempts to restrict or ban LGBTQ+ content in our schools. Instead, please advocate for policies that promote inclusive, age-appropriate education that reflects the true diversity of our communities. Our children deserve an education that prepares them for a world where understanding and respecting differences is essential for success and social harmony.
